Aqueous Ozone On Demand

TECHNOLOGY & FAQS

Safer more powerful cleaning solutions

Sanzonate’s Aqueous Ozone technology simply converts potable water into ozonated water. This highly oxidized water is a powerful antimicrobial agent that safely and effectively inactivates most bacteria and viruses at >99.999% in less than 30 secs. Aqueous Ozone is also a very versatile solution that can be utilized to clean and deodorize in any environment.

What is Aqueous Ozone?

In nature, ozone is formed by lightning causing an ordinary oxygen molecule (O2) to split into two oxygen atoms (O), which rejoin the ordinary molecules (O2) to form Ozone or O3. Ozone can also be synthesized or man-made by combining an electrical charge with oxygen creating O3 which is infused into water. Thus, the term Aqueous Ozone.

An inorganic molecule, Ozone (O3) is an allotropic form of oxygen (meaning it exists in two or more different forms). Each molecule contains three atoms of oxygen instead of the standard two, which is why Ozone is also scientifically known as trioxygen. It takes the form of a pale blue gas which is formed naturally in the atmosphere and has a fresh, sharp smell.

In the same way that Ozone is formed naturally by the discharge of electricity during a thunderstorm, Ozone is produced in a modern electrical Ozone generator. This method of Ozone generation is formed by corona discharge, where a high voltage is passed across a gas stream containing oxygen. The energy of the high voltage splits an oxygen molecule (O2) into two oxygen atoms (O), which recombine with ordinary molecules of oxygen (O2) to form the Ozone formula (O3).

Mother Nature creates ozone during thunderstorms to oxidize the air. Ozone is formed by lightning discharges during and after a thunderstorm, which gives the air its characteristic fresh, sharp smell.

Aqueous Ozone (AO) or ozonated water is a natural oxidation process.  Ozone (O3) is a very biodegradable molecule and after it’s relatively short life of up to four hours, simply reverts back to oxygen (O2) and water (H2O).  AO is recognized by the FDA as safe and has earned GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status.  AO devices are Registered with and Regulated by the EPA, is compliant with the EPA Organic Program, and is an approved member of the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) that develops and enforces consistent national standards for organically produced agricultural products.

AO is a powerful oxidizing agent capable of causing chemical change through oxygen. The oxidation of organic material such as bacteria, ruptures the cell wall and inactivates the pathogen. AO also inactivates viruses from hosts such as hard, non-porous surfaces.

Likewise, adding an electrical charge to water, creates nano-sized ozone gas bubbles in the water. These electrically charged bubbles attach themselves to dirt/soil particles, causing the particles in turn to become charged and repel from surfaces, thus enabling soils to be suspended in the water and wiped away.

Since most odors are caused by bacteria, it stands to reason that AO is a very effective, natural deodorizer by inactivating the odor at the cellular level.

Aqueous Ozone uses just one ingredient; all-natural potable water at about 1 penny per gallon. AO can be used on multiple surfaces and fabrics to sanitize, deodorize, and clean and does so without any chemical-based agents, dyes, or perfumes.  Many ingredients used in cleaning agents can cause irritation or injury to skin, eyes, and respiratory systems as well as damage surfaces they are meant to sanitize and clean.

  • Reduces the need for chemicals-as AO is produced ‘in situ’ or onsite, there are no storage issues, no container/packaging disposal, no inventory levels to maintain, nor any transportation costs
  • No pollutants-the only “breakdown” biproduct is oxygen
  • Any wastewater is safe to reenter surface drains, sink drains, and waterways

Cooper Farms is committed to using environmentally sound business practices, including limiting our energy and water consumption. Sanzonate’s laundry units helps us in that effort with their 100% natural producing ozonated water product. We’re reducing our use of bleaches and detergents by 75%, reducing our drying time and as a result our energy costs by 50%, and extending the life of our employees’ uniforms.

Felix Suarez. Preventive Maintenance Manager, Cooper Farms, Oakwood, OH

Since we have had the Sanzonate solutions in place at all three of our restaurants, we have cut our cleaning time and labor in half. Our chemical costs for cleaning/disinfecting have been reduced by 70% in that same period. We also have an ozonated water unit dedicated to our ice machine and in the seven months since it was installed, we have not had to clean or maintain the unit, or replace any filters. Quite simply, we have not seen any mold or bacteria inside the ice cavity during that time.

Chris Hoffman. General Manager/Owner, Lansky’s Restaurants. Omaha, NE

Sanzonate products are not only effective, but are very versatile. We use the oxidized water on every type of surface throughout the school, and in our floor machines as well. We have been using Sanzonate products since March 2021, and we are very pleased with the benefits they bring to our school.
