Biden-Harris Administration Takes Action to Cut PFAS from U.S. Government Custodial Contracts

Sanzonate Global Poised to Meet GSA Priority Purchase of Sustainable Products for all U.S. Government-owned Buildings

OMAHA, NEBRASKA, May 1, 2024, /PRNewswire/

In an EPA Press Office release dated April 8, 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration is directing government contractors to purchase cleaning products for federal buildings that are free of toxic “forever chemicals.” The move is aimed at better protecting the health of custodial staff, federal employees, and the environment. This change is the result of a collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to implement President Biden’s Federal Sustainability Plan, which directs federal agencies to prioritize the purchase of sustainable products and services including products without added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals.”

The change is reflected in GSA’s custodial specification. Contractors will be required to use products certified to ecolabels such as EPA’s Safer Choice which meet strict criteria for human health and the environment by using effective, safer chemical alternatives, as well as certain Green Seal® certifications.

Currently, GSA’s Public Building Service has more than 600 contracts for custodial services at more than 1,500 U.S. government-owned buildings at a cost of more than $400 million per year and expects that most of these contracts will include the new specifications within five years. The updated specification requires that contractors use cleaners and hand soaps must be certified to the EPA Safer Choice, Green Seal® GS-37, Green Seal® GS-41, or Green Seal® GS-53 certifications, which do not allow intentionally added PFAS in product formulations.

Our Aqueous Ozone products have been tested and Green Seal Certified® for GS-37 and the GS-53 standards for health, sustainability, and product performance. We’re excited to begin working with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to offer government contractors our products to meet the new specifications.

Practically every day we find new ways to use the Sanzonate AO water. It cleans and sanitizes almost anything without using chemicals! We’ve seen a significant decrease in the cost of chemicals to clean our hotel, restaurants, and athletic club and it’s safer for our staff and guests.

Cooper Farms is committed to using environmentally sound business practices, including limiting our energy and water consumption. Sanzonate’s laundry units helps us in that effort with their 100% natural producing ozonated water product. We’re reducing our use of bleaches and detergents by 75%, reducing our drying time and as a result our energy costs by 50%, and extending the life of our employees’ uniforms.

Felix Suarez. Preventive Maintenance Manager, Cooper Farms, Oakwood, OH

Since we have had the Sanzonate solutions in place at all three of our restaurants, we have cut our cleaning time and labor in half. Our chemical costs for cleaning/disinfecting have been reduced by 70% in that same period. We also have an ozonated water unit dedicated to our ice machine and in the seven months since it was installed, we have not had to clean or maintain the unit, or replace any filters. Quite simply, we have not seen any mold or bacteria inside the ice cavity during that time.

Chris Hoffman. General Manager/Owner, Lansky’s Restaurants. Omaha, NE

Sanzonate products are not only effective, but are very versatile. We use the oxidized water on every type of surface throughout the school, and in our floor machines as well. We have been using Sanzonate products since March 2021, and we are very pleased with the benefits they bring to our school.

Sandy Williams. Principal of St. Michael’s Catholic School, South Sioux City, NE

We’ve been able to save money every month by not having to buy filters for our ice machines at our school. The ice storage bins look better and we’ve actually had compliments on the ice we use in our concession stands.

Rusty Valverde. Head Custodian, Elkhorn South H.S., Omaha, NE

We were using a variety of chemical-based cleaning agents in our club, hotel, restaurant, and children’s activity center. Our goal was to simplify our processes with an approach that is highly effective and at the same time provides a zero-risk alternative to harmful chemicals. We found Sanzonate to be the company that would help us reach that goal. Our staff uses the Sanzonate water on exercise equipment, bathroom fixtures, countertops, chairs, walls, floors, food-prep areas, door handles, and more. We literally find new ways to use the oxidized water every day and it’s completely safe.

Heather Stanek. General Manager, Renaissance Club Sport-Aliso Viejo, California

Our Speedee Mart convenience store locations have benefitted from the Sanzonate “green” technology ensuring that we provide our customers with the cleanest and safest experience possible. We really get the best of both worlds by using Sanzonate’s Aqueous Ozone products. They are more effective and they are safe, which is important for our customers, our staff, and for the environment.

Greg McNeal. Operations Director, Western Oil Speedee Mart, Omaha NE

After the installation of the Sanzonate Laundry Units at our Marriott franchised hotel, we are saving money in detergents and bleach expenditures and extending the life of our linens by eliminating the chemicals we were using in our laundry machines. It’s a no-brainer decision.

Michael Robby. Hotel General Manager, Renaissance Club Sport Hotel, Fitness, and Spa, Aliso Viejo, CA

We’ve replaced our carbon filtration system that we used in our ice machines at the Rosebud Casino with Sanzonate Ice Machine Units. We found that the ice machine storage cavities are cleaner and free of the moldy slime that had built-up. On top of that, the ice that is used by our patrons and guests is clear and bacteria-free.

Brett Elk. Director of Facilities, Rosebud Casino, Rosebud, SD
